Navy Cadets – who we are

Training Ship Ahuriri is a unit of the New Zealand Cadet Forces, and the Navy Cadet unit based in Napier. It was stood up in 2020 and currently has 23 Cadets and six commissioned officers and staff. The Unit Commander is Lieutenant Frances Mist NZCF.

The unit meets at the Drill Hall, at the bottom of Coote Road, Napier from 6.45pm to 9pm on Tuesdays during school term times. The minimum age for Cadets is 13, or 12 if that 12-year-old is already attending secondary school. Cadets are able to serve until their 20th birthday, or longer if they are willing to transfer to the staff list.

In addition to Tuesday night parades, Cadets take part in weekend activities, including kayaking, rowing, sailing and powerboating. Our boatshed is close to the Napier Sailing Club.

We run a structured, four-year training programme which includes practical boat handling and small boat safety, seamanship, navigation, tides and weather, firearms safety and shooting, first aid, marine VHF radio operation, leadership, public speaking, drill and ceremonial. As Cadets get older they are able to spend weeks away on leadership courses hosted at NZ Defence Force bases.

Cadets are promoted through the ranks as they gain skills and experience. They become self-disciplined, confident and responsible young citizens. Our vision is to produce New Zealand’s leaders of tomorrow.

We aim to keep costs to families as low as possible. Uniforms are provided free on long-term loan. Fees are currently set at $100 for the first year, $60 for the second year, and are free after that.
